SUVs are more green than mass transit? According to Up North Mommy, the average SUV driving mom, who up till now was feeling guilty about there SUV ownership, can parade to town with pride.
“Guess what? If anyone ever tried to make you feel guilty for driving your SUV, you can now tell them you’re behaving more environmentally friendly than those moms who take buses or trains.” Up North Mommy
Can this be true? The information that Up North Mommy refers to comes from Breitbart.com. In an article entitled Think Twice About ‘Green’ Transport, Breitbart says:
“In some circumstances, for instance, it could be more eco-friendly to drive into a city — even in an SUV, the bete noire of green groups — rather than take a suburban train. It depends on seat occupancy and the underlying carbon cost of the mode of transport.” Go here to see the original: Politics @ Up North Mommy » SUVs are more green than mass transit?

This discussion seems to be the result of a University of California at Davis study. The authors of this study recommend that people start to look at transportation choices on a situation by situation basis, instead of blanket statement like “public transportation is greener that SUVs”. The study points out that there are many factors that play into the environmental cost of a certain mode of transportation.
The moral of this story seems to be: there are no broad solutions or problems. Individuals, need to make individual choices, based on an individual set of factors.
