One Week Entertainment [2-28-09]

By Kaleena If it’s one things I’m really rather good at, it’s celebrity news and gossip. It also happens to be one of the most feminine things about me. I am frequently drawn by a curious magnetism to those “rubbish” magazines that line the pathway to the grocery-store checkouts. Drives Jake crazy, but I stand by that I can’t help it! I suppose, then, that it was an inevitable for me to volunteer and take over the ‘One Week in Entertainment’ article. I hope you are amused, entertained and

Environmental Concern Study

Posted by W2G

‘Due to greater concerns about jobs, crime, education and other ’survival’ issues, African Americans are unconcerned about the environment’.  This was a common misconception until a 2003 University of Michigan study.  Paul Mohia, author of the now 5 year old study and associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment said, “This study provides clear evidence that conventional wisdom is wrong.”

“Dispelling Old Myths: African American Concern for the Environment”, by Paul Mohia, references 30 years of data from the National Opinion Research Center, 20 years of data from the League of Conservation Voters, 12 years of University of Michigan - Detroit Area Studies, and the People of Color Environmental Groups Directory.

Key Findings:

  •  African Americans are more likely than white Americans to make lifestyle choices that help protect the environment in the categories of buying pesticide-free foods (37% of African American - 29% of Whites), cunsuming less meat (15% of African American - 8% of Whites), and driving less (16% of African Americans - 10% of Whites).
  •  African Americans are as likely as white Americans to belong to environmental groups (9% of Whites - 8% of African Americans).
  • African Americans express significantly greater concern than whites about their local environment.
  • African Americans in Congress have been among the strongest and most consistent supporters of environmental protection legislation over the past two decades.

“Environmental issues are not ‘luxury’ issues to African Americans. Survey results such as these demonstrate that environmental quality issues are a priority on many different levels.” Paul Mohia.

Dow Solar Shingles

Posted by W2G

It has been all over the news lately - Dow Solar Solutions’ Solar Shingles - including, The Detroit Free Press and The Chicago Tribune.  According to the articles and TV reports, Dow Solar Solutions is working on solar residential roofing shingles.

Dow has been working with three home builders;  Lennar Corp. , Pulte Homes Inc., and Prost Builders Inc.; along with an Arizona based company, Global Solar Energy Inc., that produces flexible materials.

“We’ve thrown everything you can imagine at them from simulated hail to fire to see how they react, One day, a person would no more think about buying a house without solar shingles than they would buy a house without plumbing. That is our hope, at least.” Robert J. Cleereman, senior director of solar development for Dow Chemical.

In a November, 2008 press release, Bob Cleereman, Dow’s senior technical director of building integrated photovoltaic technology, had this to say: “Dow’s innovative technology is based on a much more cost-effective photovoltaic material, called CIGS, and these cells are ‘packaged’ within the roofing product creating a ‘solar shingle,’ This approach enables lower fabrication and installation costs, because both the conventional and solar roofing shingles are installed at the same time. The result for the home or building owner is that solar-generated electricity costs no more than power generated by burning green house gas-creating fossil fuels.”

1864?-1943

“George Washington Carver 1864?-1943, American agricultural chemist, b. Diamond, Mo., grad. Iowa State College (now Iowa State Univ.; B.S., 1894; M.A. 1896). Born a slave, he later, as a free man, earned his college degree. In 1896 he joined the staff of Tuskegee Institute as director of the department of agricultural research, retaining that post the rest of his life. His work won him international repute. Carver’s efforts to improve the economy of the South (he dedicated himself especially to bettering the position of African Americans) included the teaching of soil improvement and of diversification of crops. He discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut, the sweet potato, and the soybean and thus stimulated the culture of these crops. He devised many products from cotton waste and extracted blue, purple, and red pigments from local clay. From 1935 he was a collaborator of the Bureau of Plant Industry. Carver contributed his life savings to a foundation for research at Tuskegee. In 1953 his birthplace was made a national monument. “
