Obama: Environment

Posted by W2G
During the election I did not post any blogs regarding the candidates environmental positions and took some critisism for that.  This was never intended to be a political site.
Now that the elections are over I feel it more appropriate to bring you information regarding our new President’s environmenal position.  Here it is:

Gaiam.com, Inc

According to the site my.barackobama.com, The Obama-Biden comprehensive New Energy for America plan will:

1. Provide some short-term relief at the gas pump.

How?  The Obama-Biden camp plans to achive this, in part, by enacting a Windfall Profits Tax. This, they claim, will provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families.  In addition, they plan to crack down on excessive energy speculation and swap oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Cut Prices.

2. Within the next 10 years, eliminate imports from the Middle East and Venezuela.

In order to occomplish this, Obama wants to increase current fuel economy standards. He also plans to get one-million electric hybrid cars on the road by 2015 and create a $7,000 Tax Credit for purchasing this type of advance technology vehicles.  My.BarakObama.com says, the the new administaration also has plans to stablish a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard, a “Use it or Lose It” approach to existing oil and gas leases, and promote the responsible domestic production of oil and natural gas.

3. Create new green jobs.

This, according to the site, will be achieved in conjuction with the other goals, including: Ensurng that 10% of the U.S. electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25% by 2025; deploying cheap, clean, fast energy sources; weatherizing one-million American homes annually; developing and utilizing clean coal technology; and prioritizing the construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline.

4. Reduce U.S. greenhouse emisions 80% over the next 40 years.

Obama wants to implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 and make the United States a leader in climate change.

I look forward to your comments and discussion regarding the new administrations plans.  To learn more about the details please visit www.my.barackobama.com
